Volleyball rotation: how it works and when you rotate
Rotation means players changing places after their team wins the serve back. Thanks to it everyone plays both the front and back row, and the serve passes from player to player.
Updated:
Zones 1–6
Each team’s half is split into six zones. The front row at the net has zones 4, 3 and 2 (from the left), the back row zones 5, 6 and 1. Zone 1 is right back, and the serve always comes from there.
When do you rotate?
A team rotates only when it wins back the right to serve, i.e. wins a rally after the opponent’s serve. If the serving team wins the point, it does not rotate and the same player serves again.
Which direction?
Rotation goes clockwise. The player in zone 2 moves to zone 1 and serves, and everyone else moves one place:
- 2 → 1 (serve)
- 1 → 6
- 6 → 5
- 5 → 4
- 4 → 3
- 3 → 2
How rotations are numbered
Coaches number rotations by the setter’s zone. In rotation 1 the setter serves from zone 1, in rotation 2 they are in zone 6, then 5, 4, 3 and 2. After six turns the team is back where it started.
Rotation and the overlap rule
The rotational order must hold at the moment the server hits the ball. Who has to stand in front of or next to whom is defined by the overlap rule. Serving out of turn is a rotational fault and costs a point.
